Abstract: Recent advances like ultra high bandwidth networks, heterogenous compute accelerators and network programmability etc. has led to increased impedance mismatch between compute, communication and storage thus resulting in reduced efficacy of HPC systems. In this talk, we will discuss the new challenges and bottlenecks created by recent advances in data centric computing. I will also present some techniques for better orchestration of workflows as well as minimizing data transfer times by exploiting compute-communication fungibility. Puneet Sharma is a Distinguished Technologist from the Hewlett Packard Laboratories, Palo Alto, CA where he heads the Networked Systems group.

This Keynote will provide the context of the challenges driven by IOT, 5G, Retailer, Healthcare applications and more. These services access cloud solutions with millions of connections/sec and 10s of millions of active flows. SONiC has already provided multiple public clouds with ubiquitous Petabit/sec switching capabilities between compute and storage nodes while DASH (our latest Open-Source initiative) is now introducing unrivaled connection performance. This talk will highlight some of the latest challenges faced by the modern cloud and introduce the key technologies that bring us 100x connection scale across diverse and large-scale computing using Microsoft’s open-source initiative (DASH). This latest Microsoft initiative has active participation of the industries Switch suppliers, DPU providers and several cloud and enterprise Service Providers. Gerald de Grace from Microsoft Azure and Pioneer of SONiC (Software Open Source for Networking in the Cloud) and executive sponsor for DASH (Disaggregated APIs for SONiC Hosts), will be discussing new challenges for diverse and high scale computing. Gerald will discuss technologies currently under development to increase inter-compute connection performance by as much as 100x.
